Why Is Project Lifesaver Successful?

This morning we received a google alert concerning the rescue of an 8 year old autistic boy, who was safely found swimming in the ocean, tracked by a Project Lifesaver bracelet. Not only was this a great rescue by the agency involved, it also highlighted the importance of the program. We could just send out the Project Lifesaver transmitter bracelets to those needing them and make sure the agency just has equipment, but that would only be half of the equation that has made this program successful.

The other half of the solution is the training and support given by Project Lifesaver Headquarters. Not only do we train personnel on how to use and maintain the equipment, we teach them how to work with the individuals they will interact with in the program, as well as teach them search and rescue procedures and best practices, as demonstrated by the Lieutenant in this incident. Finding lost loved ones is only part of the job – just one piece of the puzzle. Our agencies must be able to interact with them appropriately, so the missing individuals will trust the officers and return home to their families. Project Lifesaver is successful because it is not just a device! It is a complete program – developed and taught in a specific way to find those that wander in the most effective and efficient way possible.
